EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers has undergone a second surgery on his right knee this offseason, as confirmed by a source to ESPN. This procedure was deemed a «cleanup» following Nabers’ ACL tear in September, aimed at removing scar tissue that was causing stiffness.
The Giants are optimistic about Nabers’ readiness for Week 1, with the season opener scheduled for September 13 against the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium. Initially, there was hope that he would be prepared for the start of training camp in late July, but his recovery has necessitated a delay.
At 22 years old, Nabers has experienced ongoing knee stiffness during his rehabilitation. He was seen using a hands-free crutch in January. The initial surgery was performed on October 28 by Dr. Daniel E. Cooper, a well-known knee specialist and team physician for the Cowboys.
In February, Nabers shared with ESPN that along with the ACL tear, he had a full meniscus repair, which typically complicates recovery. However, he noted that his recovery was progressing «phenomenal.»
The Athletic was the first to report on Nabers’ second surgery.
This offseason, the Giants have restructured their wide receiver lineup. Leading receiver Wan’Dale Robinson has signed with the Tennessee Titans, while New York has brought in Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin III through free agency and traded up to select former Notre Dame standout Malachi Fields in the third round of the draft. The team has also recently worked out Odell Beckham Jr.
In addition to Nabers, veteran Darius Slayton has recently had core muscle surgery, and the Giants are hopeful he will be ready for the start of training camp.
Nabers had a record-setting rookie season in 2024 after being selected sixth overall from LSU, catching a franchise-record 109 passes for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns. He seemed poised to continue that success, recording 18 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns before his injury in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers. His 127 receptions in his first 19 games rank second in NFL history for the most through 20 games, trailing only Beckham.Tomado de https://www.espn.com/
