The NFL is standing firm in its decision to expand its streaming game offerings despite facing criticism from President Donald Trump and scrutiny from the U.S. Justice Department.
During a press conference regarding the recent schedule release, NFL executive vice president of media distribution Hans Schroeder emphasized the league’s commitment to its partnerships with streaming services. «We love our model,» he stated, asserting that it is the most fan-friendly distribution model in sports and entertainment.
According to league officials, 87% of NFL games are broadcast on free networks like CBS, NBC, FOX, and ABC. However, Schroeder pointed out that the league is adapting to changing viewing habits as more fans turn to streaming platforms such as Netflix. «We think broadcast networks have been an incredible home,» he said, adding that the NFL aims to reach fans on both traditional and streaming platforms.
Trump recently criticized the NFL’s move to streaming, expressing concerns about accessibility for fans who may struggle to afford multiple subscriptions. When asked about potential government intervention, he replied, «I don’t know, but I don’t like it.»
The Justice Department is reportedly reviewing the NFL’s broadcasting strategies for possible anticompetitive practices under the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961, which provides the league with limited antitrust protections. As the NFL continues to diversify its broadcasting options, including games on Netflix and Amazon Prime, the cost of accessing NFL content is rising, leading to further criticism from the National Association of Broadcasters and FOX chairman emeritus Rupert Murdoch.
Despite the backlash, the NFL remains resolute. Jeff Miller, NFL executive vice president of communications and public affairs, stated, «We’re committed to being on broadcast television in ways that other content is not… We’ll continue to do what’s best for our fans, which means staying on broadcast television.»Tomado de https://www.espn.com/
